Fan Review

NOTE: The writer of this review is unknown.

Okay, I s’pose I’m not exactly a fan of Courtney’s. I liked Hole’s records though. Anyway, the show was last night. Advance tickets sold out so we waited in line for two hours to obtain a few of the rumored 100 first-come-first-serve tickets available. To make a long story short, we got in, as did everybody who showed up, to the best of my knowledge, confirming the postulate that club owners will fit as many people as is humanly possible into a club if a buck is to be made, regardless of fire codes. I’m not complaining, though. It would have been a supreme drag to have waited for two hours only to be told no dice.

Anyway, it was an all ages show at the Rendon Inn, a big frat bar that has an airplane hangar like structure adjacent known as, appropriately, the Hangar. Tickets were only $10. The fact that it was an all ages show and so cheap are both to Ms. Love’s credit, I’d say. My friends and I did the right thing avoiding advance ticket surcharges courtesy of the vile Ticketmaster (go, Eddie, go).

As far as band reviews, the first band (artist?) was Maggie Estep. Missed her entirely. Second band was the much-hyped (Time Magazine, at least) Veruca Salt, who begged the question, “Can the Breeders sue for copyright infringement?” Sure I like the Breeders, but America doesn’t need another Breeders. They were thoroughly plodding and humorless in the worst pseudo-Smashing Pumpkin manner. Maybe I’d prefer their stuff on the radio to, say, Boyz 2 Men, but live they were way too “Alternative.” Maybe if they’d smile more and do some surf tunes …

So then there’s, like, a 30 minute wait while some fat guys with beards and ponytails break down VC’s stuff, assemble Hole’s stuff, check every instruments–twice–and position some dolls (get it?) around the stage. Rock ‘n’ roll, dudes. Finally, the band comes out, with Courtney taking the stage last to a wave of cheers. I couldn’t tell you what songs they did, because I only know a few. They did all the ones I know, I think. Courtney was wearing some kind of a wedding-looking dress. She immediately lit up a cigarette before playing a note. She looked drunk or stoned or both. Between numbers she muttered in the mic and I was way the f–k in the back, so I couldn’t hear exactly what she was saying, but it sounded like she was making a plea for Percodan and later Darcon or something like that–painkillers. Maybe she broke a nail.

The band and songs sounded okay, but Courtney just was not into it at all. She acted like a spoiled rock star, a role she needs to pay considerable more dues to assume. The highlight of the show for me was when, after saying, “Grunge is dead. It will be replaced by assholes with synthesizers …”, she freaked out and started screaming at the audience, “I hate you! I hate you all!” Then she threw her glass of water and her bottle of water into the crowd. I’m not sure what prompted this, whether it was punks at the front of stage taunting her or just a general observation about the crowd. If anybody else was at the show, I’d like to know what they thought or heard. I can’t be sure why she freaked. Anyway, somebody had the intelligence to throw their own water back onto Ms. Love, which she accepted resignedly. Then they did that song about “from the back.” I left after that one.

As far as gossip, gossip, gossip goes, Love said that she is moving to New Orleans and asked the crowd not to bother her. “I’m not going to have to hire a guard, am I? You’re not going to hang out in from of my house like they do in Seattle. I just want to be left alone.” She also revealed that she and “Trent” had purchased a house here; he paid $500,000, she paid $650,000. “So, I burned him,” she said, lending credence to the rumour that their alleged liaison is kaput.

Oh, and if you’re from Seattle and you’re thinking of taking a road trip to New Orleans to harass her, I hear the house is at First and Coliseum, ina hawt uh da Gawden Distric, dawlin. That’s all.
