What I’m trying to recall is all the stuff she said to the audience. The line I best remember from the Filmore show is “well, what am I going to do now? Become an old, lonely rock & roll chick? I don’t want to do that. Dickhead! Why can’t you just come back?” She also mentioned that “Pennyroyal Tea” was a song that her and Kurt wrote together.
Some things I caught on the left side of the stage (where I was standing) was Drew Barrymore sitting next to the sound guy through most of Veruca Salt’s and Hole’s shows, Frances Bean was there as well (with earmuffs on). Courtney stopped on the way out to talk to the guy standing next to me because he had a cd for her. Not just “ya, thanks, I have to be somewhere, bye”, she came over and really talked to him. I was impressed with how REAL and nice she was, not at all the star-“I’m better than you” attitude that so many others have.
Anyone catch the Edge show? (11/12/94 in Palo Alto) By comparison I’d say the band and Courtney were tighter at the Edge. It was shorter and they sounded better than the previous night at the Filmore BUT the audience at the Filmore was more civilized and Hole play more songs (like Pennyroyal Tea).
The Edge definitely had a “let’s bash Courtney” element, you know, the kind of jug heads that don’t even like the music, they only pay for the thrill of heckling the band? Well, they were there and just in case Courtney hasn’t suffered enough this year they heaped on a few more insults, both verbal and physical. Sad, sad…
The real highlight though was after the show. Believe It or Not, I met Courtney and the rest back stage (don’t ask how, I want to use that trick again). I refuse to repeat the conversations because I wasn’t there to spy on them and Courtney specificly stated what was being said was to be kept private but I will tell you netters that Courtney is a better person, in person, than you can imagine. Under the tough exterior she’s a very warm and intelligent person. How do I know? Well, even after the crappy treatment she just received from some of the Edge crowd, she said it was ok for me (a total stranger) to hang out with them. And after sitting there for about an hour with Courtney, her daughter, Drew, Eric and a few others I got the overwhelming impression that these were *good* people. The kind you’d be happy to call your friends (unlike most bands and stars I’ve met.) This wasn’t for the camera, this was just them-at-home.
I hope in some way this will reduce some of the net-bashing Courtney receives. I met her. She’s a nice person. She cares about people. Really. Don’t fall for the bad press.
Oh, and if this ever gets to you Courtney, I’m really sorry about the NIN shirt, I had no idea you two had a falling out, and thanks for being so nice, you “made the night” for me! 🙂
